• AI can handle up to 70% of workloads in routine support, reporting and testing roles
• Specialised AI roles see sharp demand growth, while organisations turn to reskilling to bridge emerging skill gaps
Chennai, 8th September 2026: India’s technology job market is seeing a sharp shift as AI moves from experimentation to wider enterprise use. While routine, rules based activities are increasingly becoming candidates for automation, demand is rising for specialised talent that can build, deploy, manage and govern AI systems.
According to CIEL HR‘s analysis of technology workforce demand, demand for Agentic AI Engineers grew 260% in 2026 compared with 2025, the highest growth among the emerging roles tracked. GenAI Solutions Architects and AI Product Owners recorded 120% growth each, while LLM Engineers and MLOps Engineers saw demand rise by 86.5% and 82.2%, respectively.
At the other end of the spectrum, AI is taking on a significant share of workloads within routine technology functions. AI can handle up to 70% of the workload involved in ticket resolution and report generation, and 65% of the workload involved in test case creation. This places support, reporting, and manual quality assurance among the technology functions with the highest potential for task-level automation, while the remaining workload continues to require human involvement.
“AI is changing the value attached to different technology skills. We are seeing routine activities become increasingly automated, while demand is growing for people who can build, integrate and govern AI in real business environments. The opportunity for organisations is to look at this as a workforce transition, identifying where technology can take on repetitive work while building the skills needed for the next phase of growth,” said Aditya Narayan Mishra, MD & CEO, CIEL HR.
Reskilling takes centre stage as skill gaps widen
The changing technology demand is also prompting organisations to strengthen internal talent pipelines. Generative AI Engineering, AI/ML, Cloud Engineering, Cloud Transformation, Cybersecurity, Data Engineering and Automation are emerging as key capability areas where organisations are looking to build talent. Market-level skill gaps across AI, cloud and cybersecurity range from 38–61%, increasing the need for organisations to develop talent alongside external hiring.
IT services organisations are responding through AI-focused training programmes, role-based reskilling, cloud academies, hyperscaler certification pathways, enterprise AI programmes and structured early-career talent programmes. Existing delivery, infrastructure, support and engineering talent are increasingly being brought into these programmes to build capabilities aligned with changing business demand.
“The workforce transition is not going to happen through hiring alone. Organisations will need to look at how existing talent can move into emerging skill areas as the nature of technology work changes. Reskilling and redeployment can help bridge some of the gap between the skills organisations have today and those they will need tomorrow,” added Arjun Gupta, Founder & CEO, Courseplay
The analysis draws on a broad labour market intelligence base covering 450M+ job postings, 30M+ professional profiles and 10,000+ mapped skills. It combines job posting data, talent supply and skills intelligence to assess how technology hiring and skill requirements are changing across India.
The analysis is based on observed job posting data from March 2024 to May 2026, with forward-looking projections informed by current demand patterns, technology adoption trends, company hiring signals and sector growth expectations.
